Want to be self employed? Professionals have to know how to sell themselves to employers and customers to make any money at all. Learn the secrets of marketing from home.

The art of self promotion is a necessary skill for those who want to become self employed and make money with work at home. Know the ins and outs of marketing from home, and learn how to sell yourself to make self employment successful.

Sell Yourself!

It’s one of the rules of self employment, though many professionals may not realize it. When it comes to making money at home, it’s important to know how to sell yourself. The tools of the self employed professional aren’t hard to master: the resume, the query letter and the portfolio. With these, anyone can start marketing from home…and hopefully, start making money.

The Resume

It’s the thing all employers want to see, no matter the employment goal. It’s the resume, and for self employed professionals it’s incredibly important. Self employed resumes are no different than more traditional resumes – all the same rules apply. Be sure to keep the resume on a single page, as no employer has the time to wade through pages and pages of job information. Be sure to highlight the skills used for each job listed, and list only jobs that seem the most impressive or relevant. If job experience is a little thin, round out the resume with education and skill information. Some applicants even include an Objective at the top of the page. This shows off a little of that ambition (something employers like to see). Be sure to include a resume with every single job applied to, whether the job ad asks for a resume or not.

The Query Letter

Even if nothing else is sent to employers, the query letter is a must. Keep it simple, short and to the point – because, once again, employers don’t have time to read paragraph after paragraph when wading through job applicants. It’s a good idea to state the purpose for writing right up front: i.e. “I’m writing today in response to the job posted on (so-and-so Web site).” But don’t forget, this query letter is just one more aspect of marketing from home. Be sure to point out qualifications and skills in a clear, concise manner. With every aspect of self employment, it’s important to know how to sell yourself. Never miss an opportunity to show off skill, or point out qualities that might apply to the job at hand.

The Portfolio

Always, always include a link to the professional portfolio at the end of every query letter. When it comes to marketing from home, the portfolio is one of the most essential selling points. Portfolios should contain links to completed projects, but be sure to showcase only the most impressive efforts. After all, knowing how to sell yourself means showing them only your very best. It’s worth it to spend a little time on the portfolio, making it pleasing to the eye and easy to navigate. Marketing from home is a lot easier when there’s a great portfolio to rely upon.
